Current Status: Tuty's Tech Challenges

Tuty is a resident of the virtual world called Second Life. Her blog about this experience is "My 2nd Life Journal" on Google's Blogger. You can find it at http://my2ndlifejournal.blogspot.com/

Due to ongoing tech challenges, I am not exploring virtual worlds as frequently as I used to.

Evenso, I hope that the information provided here is a good preview for you.

Go explore, have fun, network with some great folks and enjoy!

As I am able, I will continue to update the information in this blog.

My Nonprofit Journey: Virtual Volunteering in Nonprofit Commons of Second Life®

As explained previously,Tuty (aka blogger Donna) is a resident of the virtual world called Second Life®. Her blog about this experience is "My 2nd Life Journal" on Google's Blogger.

The main reason that Tuty joined SL™ was due to publicity in the national news about successful nonprofit efforts in this virtual environment. However, the primary reason that Tuty has remained in SL™, is due to the excellent and strong network of connections in the Nonprofit Commons (NPC) who are like-minded about the vital importance of service and passionate about their causes.
As a perk for her volunteer efforts, Tuty's group, "Alumni in NPSL", has now become a tenant in office #01 of the Plush Nonprofit Commons SIM in Second Life. If you are already in SL™, stop by the office and see what we are doing, so far, and what we are planning in the near future.

If you are not yet in SL™, but would like to know more, please note that:
*SL™ is free to all new residents
*Free orientation classes are provided by great SL™ groups to help you start out on the right foot, so-to-speak
*Most items that you may want/need in SL™, like clothing, are available for free
*I have found that the NPC volunteers are friendly and exceedingly helpful. That's a great place to start your SL™ journey.
*Read more about SL™ here. (Video tutorials are also provided there.)

International OneWebDay: Celebrate & Pledge to Help Close Digital Divide

This week, on September 22, people all over the world (and internet) are celebrating OneWebDay and taking the pledge to help close the digital divide.

Nonprofit Commons is participating by spreading the word inside Second Life® and online. If you have an SL™ AV (avatar), visit Plush Amphitheatre and take a photo with the OneWebDay poster that's posted in the kiosk next to the stairs.

More Background on OneWebDay:

Founded by Susan Crawford, who now advises President Obama on science, technology, and innovation policy, OneWebDay is a global event which is celebrated every September 22 since 2006. Much like Earth Day, which inspired it, OneWebDay provides an opportunity for communities to celebrate the power of Web for positive change, to take action to protect what is precious about it, and to educate the public and policy-makers on key social, economic, and political Web issues.

This year’s theme — One Web. For All — is all about digital inclusion, digital literacy, and working to close the digital divide. OneWebDay organizers are calling attention to efforts that work to ensure that anyone who wants it has access to the Internet and the skills they need to engage in our new communications environment.

The fight for digital inclusion is now on the cutting edge in the long struggle for social and economic justice. Access to a fast, affordable, and open Internet is essential for every child in school, every entrepreneur with a new idea, and anyone who wants full access to our government and the democratic process.

To show my support for OneWebDay and digital inclusion efforts, I have signed the 2009 pledge to Free the Internet and End the Digital Divide. I hope you will join me and help to spread the word.
